"Opening Our Eyes to Gravitational Waves"
Ground-based detectors hope soon to make the first observations
of
gravitational radiation from sources that are within
or relatively near
to our Galaxy. In 9 years LISA should open the entire
Universe to our
view through this new astronomical window. The scientific
and even
philosophical implications of these observations are
likely to be
profound. I will discuss what we expect, what may be
unexpected, and how
this new window on the Universe fits with the other ways
we have of
learning about the Universe and its fundamental physical
laws.
