"The Structure and Function of Metropolitan Baltimore as an Ecological System"
The Baltimore Ecosystem Study, Long-Term Ecological Research
project is one of two LTER programs centered in urban areas. As such,
it is an unusual ecologically based research program. In addition
to being focused in a metropolitan matrix, with its complex mixture of
natural, built, and managed ecosystem types, the project integrates ecological
theory and approaches with those from social science, hydrology, atmospheric
science, and education. Community engagement is a key to the success
of the research. The structure, strategy, and illustrative results
from the Baltimore Ecosystem Study will be presented.
