Winner of the 2022 Nordberg Award

Joiner

Joanna Joiner received bachelors, masters, and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She has worked in several different groups at Goddard including the Satellite Data Utilization Office, the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office, and the Atmospheric Chemistry and Dynamics Laboratory. Her work spans a variety of topics in Earth science using data measured from ultraviolet to microwave wavelengths. She has focused particularly on atmospheric trace gases (related to climate and air quality), clouds, chlorophyll fluorescence, and other measurements related to vegetation and the carbon cycle. She has served as deputy Project Scientist for the NASA Aura satellite, a flagship atmospheric composition satellite in the Earth Observing System (EOS). She is the US science team leader for the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), a Dutch-Finnish instrument that flies on the Aura satellite. She is also involved in science teams of several other NASA satellite missions including the geostationary Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO) and the Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, and ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission. She currently serves as the instrument scientist for NOAA's Geostationary Extended Observations (GeoXO) Atmospheric Composition sensor (ACX) that will launch in the next decade. She has served as a founding, executive, and associate editor for the journal Atmospheric Measurement Techniques and as an associate editor for the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society. She received several NASA Agency Honor Awards including for exceptional scientific achievement and outstanding leadership and the NASA-USGS Pecora award as a member of the TOMS and OMI teams. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, biking, and watching Nordic noir TV crime dramas with her family including Cocoa the cat.
