"MAGNETOSPHERIC RADIO AND PLASMA WAVES THROUGHOUT THE
SOLAR SYSTEM"
The study of magnetospheric radio and plasma waves has
a
history that extends back to the early part of the twentieth
century, when radio communication was in its infancy.
What
started out as a wide variety of mysterious radio signals
of
unknown origin has developed into a major area of research,
with important implications for the understanding of
space
plasmas, particularly those associated with planetary
magnetospheres. In this talk I will discuss the early
development of the field of radio and plasma wave research
and will trace this development into the modern era of
planetary exploration, in which spacecraft radio and
plasma
wave measurements have been obtained from nearly all
of the
planets in the solar system.
