"CARBON DIOXIDE AND CLIMATE: THE FIRST 100 YEARS"
This talk examines the emergence, eclipse and subsequent
reemergence of the carbon dioxide theory of climate change from the 1850s
to the 1950s (from John Tyndall to the IGY). I situate this story
in a larger history of elite and popular perspectives on climate change
and pay special attention to the work of G.S. Callendar. What
have people experienced, learned, feared about climate change in the past?
How have they intervened? By what path have we reached the current
state of climate apprehension?
