"Science News in the 21st Century"

Science news is in a paradoxical state. On the one hand, newspapers and TV stations continue to shrink and cut their science coverage. On the other hand, more news about science is available than ever before, notably online. But the key question remains: how to identify and satisfy the public's interest in science?

About the speaker:

Charles Day is the Online Editor at Physics Today and a regular columnist at Computing in Science & Engineering. He has had two careers. In the first, which lasted eight years, he strove to understand how the plasma around neutron stars, black holes and other cosmic objects emits X-rays. In the second, which continues, he writes and edits articles about physics and its scientific relatives. For seven years, Dr. Day ran a news department, "Search and Discovery" in
Physics Today.  Now his job includes writing stories, editing articles and running departments, along with writing the weekly "The Dayside" column. As the world of electronic publishing evolves, Dr. Day devises new editorial products that stay true to his publication's mission while taking advantage of the new ways people read, watch, and listen.
